Dogs wag their tails and cats purr. It takes about twoseconds of petting before your kitty starts purring away. It’s such a different and unique sound that seems like it comes from a far away distance.

They don’t have to open their mouths to make the sound. If you touch them you can feel the vibrations coming through their bodies. Purring shows a lot of affection and it lets you know that whatever you’re doing to make your cat purr, just keep going and Mr. fluffy will be in heaven.

The way that cats are put together makes it easy to purr. Their brain sends messages to the muscles in the voice box and it allows the muscles to vibrate creating the purring sound. As the air goes in and out the muscles work to make the cat purr making it seem as though it as a continuous sound.

Any cat that does not roar can purr. Pumas, Leopards, cats have all been known to purr. Even raccoons were caught purring. When cats purr the diaphragm is not involved at any time. The same neurological oscillator that makes the vibration is the same thing that drives our hearts to beat. Cat’s purrs are also like fingerprints. No one in the world has your finger prints and in the same way their purrs are distinguishable. They can purr in different frequency that doesn’t change as they get older.

New studies show that cats don’t only purr when they’re happy. They may even purr when they are under tense traumatic stress or a traumatic moment. There have been cats that even purr as they’re near death. Purring is an incredible ability. Studies have also found that purring since it’s at very low frequencies it can stimulate bone growth and healing. Purring also releases endorphins. Purring has been considered the cats “mantra” especially when you find them doing it in times of stress. You can’t help but appreciate the purring. Even if they’ve been purring for 15 min. straight you probably won’t get annoyed by it. Their sound is at such a low frequency that it’s a soothing sound to most humans.

Cats are used as therapy animals. Studies showed that people that own a healthy cat have lower blood pressure. The human and cat bond is very close so it is sure to make an impact on anyone that needs some extra tender loving care.
